Muslim marine to speak at UAB

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Mansoor Shams is a U.S. Marine Veteran, business owner, and Muslim youth leader.

Mansoor served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of corporal (non-commissioned officer) and received several honors including a meritorious promotion, Marine of the Quarter and Certificate of Commendation.

He's been featured by the BBC, New York Times, Washington Post, Baltimore Sun and more, and has made national TV appearances as a commentator on CNN and MSNBC.

Mansoor holds a master's degree in government, with an emphasis on national security studies, and an MBA from Johns Hopkins University.

He currently works as president of technology distribution company Eye Deal Systems, LLC. From 2005 to 2008, soon after receiving an honorable discharge, Mansoor began working for the federal government as an assistant to two SEC chairmen.

"First of all, loyalty to country of residence is a part of the Islamic faith. A lot of people do not know this. Loyalty to country of residence is taught to me as part of my tenant to being a Muslim. Is it something very Muslim of me to serve my nation," said Shams.

Shams is scheduled to speak at UAB Blazer Hall on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
