TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

A former principal and department head for Jefferson County schools admits his guilt in a child porn investigation.

Brett Kirkham, former human resources director for Jefferson County Schools, told US federal judge Scott Coogler

Monday morning "I'm pleading guilty because I'm guilty.”

He appeared inside Tuscaloosa's federal courthouse wearing black rimmed glasses and an orange jail jumpsuit.

Kirkham pleaded guilty to two federal child porn charges.

He admitted using a cell phone and a computer to entice a minor for sex and possessing child porn.

Federal prosecutors dropped two receiving child porn charges he previously faced.

Kirham has been in custody since authorities arrested him last June.

"How are you doing when you're in jail for almost a year and still pending," Kirkham's attorney Joel Sogol said of his state of mind. "He's doing the best he can. I think it was just appropriate for him to accept responsibility for what the situation was."

Kirkham was arrested following a search of his home in Tuscaloosa County in 2016.

He still faces two state charges of a school employee having sex with a student in Jefferson and Tuscaloosa Counties.

He could be sentenced within four months.
