UAB to hold clinical trial for 'inflatable' braces

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - A clinical trial at UAB is the first of its kind in the U.S. and it centers around braces.

Dr. Chung Kau is working to end the stigma that comes with traditional braces.

"Traditional braces are made up of wires, brackets and colors," Kau said.

The new type of braces UAB is working with are called aerodentis.

Undine Davis is a dental student at UAB and is taking part in the clinical trial.

"It's going to be a device that has silicone balloons in it that will slowly push your teeth into the correct position," Davis said.

Doctors say it is ideal for patients to use the device at night while sleeping.

"Patients will have the opportunity to decide when they want to use the braces. They can use them for a minimum of 10 hours a day," Kau said.

To participate in the trial, you must be between the ages of 8-60, have all your adult teeth, have crowding in your front upper or lower teeth, and maintain good oral hygiene.
