(RNN) - The U.S. Senate has approved President Donald Trump’s pick of Mike Pompeo to be director of the CIA. The vote was 66-32. The GOP controls the Senate by a narrow 52-48 margin.

The Kansas congressman is a graduate of West Point and Harvard Law School. He served as a cavalry officer patrolling the Iron Curtain before the fall of the Berlin Wall, his congressional website says.

Pompeo, 53, was involved in the military aircraft and oil field industries before his election to the House in 2010. He was a member of the House Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Pompeo also served on the House Benghazi Committee.

He's been an outspoken critic of the deal to curb Iran's nuclear programs between Iran and China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Russia and the U.S. Pompeo also is a political ally of Vice President Mike Pence, who he served with in the House.

The president visited the CIA on Jan. 23, after a tense time between Trump and members of the intelligence community in the final weeks of the Obama administration. At issue was the role Russia played in the fall U.S. election.
