TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

Top-ranked Alabama put its perfect season on the line against No. 13 Auburn in the 81st Iron Bowl Saturday.

The Crimson Tide earned bragging rights for the thirst straight year and beat the Tigers 30-12. It increases Bama's advantage in the all-time series to 45-35-1.

“This is a game that means a lot to a lot of people in this state. I’m certainly happy for our supporters, our fans and the people who support The University of Alabama that they can be happy about the victory we had today," Alabama head coach Nick Saban said.

Much had been made about Auburn’s defensive strength coming into the Iron Bowl. Bama’s freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts found out just how strong the Tigers are in the first half.

He passed to Damien Harris for a 17-yard touchdown in the first quarter, but he threw two interceptions to Daniel Thomas and Alabama only held at 13-9 lead at the half.

"We felt pretty good. We played about as bad as you could offensively and still had a chance; we were still in the game," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "We got the ball coming out of the half. Our defense played outstanding and we were feeling really good coming out of halftime.

Even so, Hurts came alive in the second half and righted the ship. He connected with ArDarius Stewart for a 38-yard score and ran for another on a gain of four.

Hurts finished with 286 yards passing yards and completed 27-of-36 attempts.

As impressive as Auburn’s defense was in the first half, it pales in comparison to the dominance shown by Bama’s defense all game.

Bama only gave up just 182 total yards and seven first downs, as opposed to the 501 yards and 26 first downs Bama put up. The Tide held Kerryon Johnson to 39 yards rushing and held three Auburn quarterbacks to a combined 116 yards in the air.

The Tigers’ only points came from the foot of Daniel Carlson. He made four of five attempts from 42, 52, 39 and 27 yards out.

“Our defensive players really play well together. Auburn presents some tough issues and challenges with personnel groups, motions, and formation adjustments, so I thought our guys did a really good job for the most part adjusting to those," Saban said.

Adam Griffith finished perfect and nailed kicks from 29, 25 and 34 yards away.

The Crimson Tide will set their sights on their third straight SEC Championship on Saturday. They will meet the Florida Gators in the Georgia Dome.

Auburn (8-4, 5-3 SEC) saw its regular season come to and end and will wait for a bowl bid.
