The FCS Championship Committee shook things up Thursday when it released its second playoff rankings.
Jacksonville State remained at the top while undefeated Sam Houston State fell from No. 2 to No. 5. Eastern Washington Moved up to No. 2 and North Dakota State climbed to No. 3.
Chattanooga swapped places with Richmond and nor the Mocs are No. 7.
Central Arkansas moved up to No. 9 and North Dakota climbed into the top 10 after being unranked last week.
SHSU is undefeated and received 22-of-26 first-place votes in the latest FCS Coaches Poll. But it's underwhelming strength of schedule caused an uproar in the initial rankings and the committee took notice.
SHSU's fall from grace could be a glimpse into JSU's future. USA Today ranks the Bearkats's strength of schedule 227 out of 253 Division I teams. JSU comes in at 172 while EWU ranks 124th, NDSU 101st, and The Citadel 166th.
If Jax State fails the committee's eye test, it could see a fall in the rankings.
The Gamecocks earned the No. 1 seed in last year's playoffs and enjoyed home-field advantage until losing to the Bison in the national championship game in Frisco, TX. If the rankings remain the same, the Gamecocks will be positioned to claim their second straight No. 1 overall seed.
The committee will reveal its playoff bracket on Sunday, Nov. 20. The top eight seeds will earn a bye during the first round of the 24-team tournament.
Rankings will be released again Tuesday, Nov. 15.
