A display hanging above a coffee shop in Tuscaloosa caught several people off guard, with many calling it racially insensitive.
A woman who wants to remain anonymous sent a tip about what appeared to be a figure hanging by a rope above the O’Henry’s Coffee shop in Tuscaloosa. She isn’t the only person who expressed concern.
“It looks like a man hanging, a black African-American man hanging,” Tuscaloosa residen tJames Crawford said.
He's referencing a picture that was taken by a woman who saw something hanging from a balcony of a building on University Boulevard and Lurleen Wallace Boulevard. The coffee shop is directly below the balcony.
“We can understand how people could get offended by a decoration like that. We just happen to be below this person's apartment,” O’Henry’s Coffee owner Randy Adamy said.
Adamy said they learned about the figure from a woman who called and left a voicemail. He said they share the building with Downtown Rock Point apartments.
Adamy said they went to the owners of the building, who went to the owner of the apartment and he removed the Halloween decoration. It’s still unknown what it was portraying.
“To see such an image, it’s kind of disturbing. People should be really mindful of the things other people see because other people’s feelings are involved, even if it’s a Halloween decoration,” Crawford said.
The property manager of the building said no one is allowed to hang any decorations, flags or signs off of the balconies and that's why they had the tenant take it down.
