CHARLESTON, SC (WBRC) -

No. 20 Samford stood just 6:17 away from a win over No. 6 Citadel Saturday but the Citadel reeled off 13-unanswered points, including a 36-yard go-ahead field goal in overtime to steal the win.

SU still had a chance to tie the game in overtime. But its 44-yard field goal attempt bounced off the upright and sent the Citadel storming onto the field in celebration.

SU lost 37-34. It’s just their second Southern Conference loss, third overall and second in a row. It also throws its chances of earning at least a split of the SOCON title into doubt.

Samford’s pass-happy offense totaled 280 yards in the air thanks to Delvin Hodges’ 35 completions on 46 attempts.

Hodges passed for two scores on gains of 18 to Emmanuel Obajimi and nine to Karel Hamilton. He ran for two more scores on gains of 10 and 57.

His 13 rushing attempts gave him a team-high 94 yards.

Samford will try for its seventh win on Nov. 12 in its final home game against Mercer.
