BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Magic City Classic Football Game is rooted in tradition.

The rivalry runs deep and every year at this time bragging rights are on the line.

“I went to Alabama A&M and the majority of my family went to Alabama State so every time we get together for tailgating it’s always a friendly competition,” said Veronica Johnson.

It’s all a part of the Magic City Classic Fun. The other part is  the food.  Jameka Nelson said  her family started tailgating nearly 20 years ago.

“It’s just a big tradition with us and people coming out of town. We’re able to come together as one and barbeque and have a good time.”

Reginald Davis and his family start tailgating early.

“We start at the beginning of the week on Tuesday and we barbeque hot dogs  and hamburgers. It’s a big party leading up until then,” Davis said.

"In recent years, tailgating has become the Magic City Classic. I don’t know if it wasn’t for tailgating the rivalry would be as big as it is. We have just as many people outside the stadium as there are inside the stadium,” continued Johnson.
