Construction crew cuts gas line in Murfreesboro

A Murfreesboro road is closed after a gas leak near the back of the MTSU campus around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon caused by construction crews.

A fire official said a construction crew working on a new Ascend Federal Credit Union building near the intersection of Dill Lane and East Main Street cut a gas line.

As a result, a pressure release valve on South Rutherford Boulevard experienced issues and caused another gas leak.

Murfreesboro police are blocking traffic on East Main from Arnette Street to Rutherford Boulevard and both lanes of South Rutherford are blocked.

“One of the issues should not take long to fix, but we may be here a while on the other one (East Main),” said Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Capt. Tony Lehew.

Atmos Energy has since shut off the gas and Murfreesboro Fire crews are preparing to leave the scene.

Both lanes on South Rutherford Boulevard have reopened, but East Main from Arnette to Rutherford will remain closed for some time.
