BESSEMER, AL (WBRC) - In light of what happened in Dallas, one church in Bessemer is taking action.

Saturday morning members of Grace Church prayed outside the Bessemer Police Department.

They surrounded the officers and put their hands on their shoulders to let them know they are here for them.

Pastor Mickey Bell prayed for their protection as they headed out onto the streets. He also knows officers have to make split second decisions and he prayed for their wisdom to make the right decision when faced with a tough situation.

"It's sad that we're going to jump to a protest before we ever pray, and so we're going to get our things in order first," Bell said. "If we pray for them and surround them I guarantee you we will not have to protest them because they're going to be making the right decisions and they're going to be protected."

"There were people out here who still have your back even when it seems like all hope is lost," Bessemer Police Chief Nathaniel Rutledge added. "That gives you the strength to keep on going."

Rutledge says he meets with church leaders monthly to keep them updated on the biggest needs he sees in the city.

He's also encouraging his officers to get out into the community more to build relationships.
