ARAB, Ala. (AP) - A rural Alabama high school is ending its tradition of playing "Dixie" at football games. The superintendent of Arab city schools, John Mullins, says he made the decision to quit playing the song at Arab High School. Mullins said the song has negative connotations that conflict with the system's core values including unity.

LIVINGSTON, Ala. (AP) - A new rural charter school is bringing racial integration to a west Alabama county where blacks and white rarely attend class together. University Charter School opened this week in Livingston. With a student body of more than 300 that's almost evenly split between blacks and whites, the school becomes the first in Sumter County to be anywhere near evenly split between the races. Sumter's public schools are nearly all-black, and whites previously attended a private school that closed.

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say two of five inmates who escaped from an Alabama jail have been recaptured. A spokesman for Marshall County Sheriff Scott Walls tells AL.com the inmates escaped Tuesday morning from the jail in Guntersville.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - The Marshall University quarterback who was part of the team's return after the 1970 plane crash that killed 75 players has died. Reggie Oliver was 66. Marshall President Jerome A. Gilbert said his "heart is broken" at the loss of Oliver on Tuesday.
