BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

If you've ever driven your car behind a bike and wondered why that cyclist isn't using the sidewalk, there is one good answer: it's illegal.

State law allows only children and police officers to ride bicycles on sidewalks. An Alabama law passed in 2015 requires cars to give cyclists three feet of space when passing. As more bikes start to share the road across north central Alabama it's important for drivers to be more alert even if they're not moving.

Some suggest that after parking, drivers use their right hand to open their car door, which encourages them to turn their head which makes it easier to check for a cyclist that might be approaching your car.
