MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Beale Street Landing in downtown Memphis has been named the world’s best marina/port in Architizer’s 2016 A+Awards.

With close to 50 categories, the A+Awards ranks the top five entries in each category, as well as dozens of special mentions.

In the marina/port category, Beale Street Landing beat out the Copenhagen Terminal Buildings in Denmark, the James R. Herman Cruise Terminal Project at Pier 27 in San Francisco, OneOcean Marina Port Vell in Barcelona, and the Yalikavak Palmarina in Turkey.

In listing Beale Street Landing as the 2016 winner, Architizer describes it as “a landmark capable to reconnect and join together Tom Lee Park, the historic Cobblestones, the Blues coming down Beale Street and the Mississippi River, the main protagonist.”

The description mentions how visitors can have a view of the Mississippi River from anywhere with no interference. The designers went on to say “that's the reason why, we minimized all vertical and obstructing elements and why the terminal building was surrounded entirely with a clear storefront to allow river views thru it.”

Beale Street Landing was designed by RTN Arquitectos, and was built in 2014. It cost more than $40 million to build, which was $10 million over budget.

According to its website, Architizer is the largest online architecture database. This is the fourth year Architizer has posted it’s A+Awards, which it claims is the largest awards program focused on promoting and celebrating the year’s best architecture and products.
