BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team cruised to an 8-1 victory over Marshall on Sunday at Mary Bowers Field to clinch the Blazers' third consecutive Conference USA series victory.
UAB (15-20, 6-3) out-hit the Herd (20, 15, 6-3), 13 to 2,as seven Blazers recorded hits in the series finale. Senior Kelly Britt led UAB at the plate with a 3-for-3 day, while racking up two RBIs.
"We scored first," head coach Marla Townsend said. "We had a big inning. Those are keys to our success. We definitely won the freebie war. Those things are huge and, more importantly, we kept the game simple. I'm proud of the way we came out today."
Senior Caitlin Attfield and junior Danii Fernandez each racked up two hits, and senior Sara Beth Williamson drove home two RBIs with her fifth home run of the season.
"We were relentless today, and we had a great family atmosphere with a great crowd," Townsend added. "I'm very pleased to come out with our third conference series win and the way we've played the last seven or so games. We've played consistently. The second half of our season is going strong. We still have our goals set and are striving to reach them."
Junior Cara Goodwin earned the complete-game victory allowing just one run and two hits over seven innings. The right hander issued just two walks while striking out seven. Goodwin improved to 8-6 on the season.
Attfield led off the game with a single up the middle, but was thrown out on a fielder's choice from Williamson. The Blazers loaded the bases with a walk to junior Mary Warren and hit by pitch delivered to Ashley Johnson. Britt put the Blazers on top, 1-0, with an RBI single to shortstop.
UAB opened the game in the bottom of the second after a one-out double to right center from Fernandez. Junior JoJo Fallen reached on a fielding error as Fernandez scored on a second error on the play. Williamson extended the UAB lead to 4-0 with her fifth home run of the season, a two-RBI shot to right center.
After back-to-back singles from freshman Lizzie Ryan and Johnson, Britt extended the UAB lead to 5-0 with an RBI double to left field.
Singles from freshman Hannah Lee and junior Amy Waters led off the bottom of the third inning. Fernandez reached on a fielder's choice as the third error for the Herd allowed Lee to score. A wild pitch during Attfield's at-bat allowed a second run to score, putting UAB on top, 7-0.
The Herd added one run in the top of the fourth after an RBI triple from Briana Daiss.
Fallen extended the Blazer lead to 8-1 with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the sixth to score Fernandez, who reached base with her second single of the game.
