BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The family of the 28-year-old woman fatally shot Thursday afternoon along 2nd Court West in Birmingham needs help paying for funeral costs.

The victim's aunt, Sandra Sager Wilson, has set up "Funds for Gwendolyn" on GoFundMe.com.

Police said Gwendolyn Ayers was walking along 2nd Court West about a block from her home when witnesses said a gold car pulled up.

Police said a conversation quickly became an argument and a male in the car began shooting. Witnesses watched Ayers run nearly half a block before collapsing on 15th Street West.

"There are no words to describe how we are losing our young people to gun violence. People just angry," Sager Wilson said Thursday near evidence technicians as they worked around the body of her niece.

"You can't watch the news the whole 30 minutes without hearing about killing," she said.

Family and friends gathered along the crime tape at the scene on Thursday. Ayers' aunt said she was well known in the community as "Miss Gwen." She was single and living with a life-long friend at the time of the shooting.

Her mother was deceased. A sister in Detroit, Michigan was contacted and had made arrangements to return to Alabama.

"This black on black crime is just ridiculous. Killing each other for no reason. Cause they don't talk to you, they look at you the wrong way," Sager Wilson said. "Look at our baby, laying over there in the street. A baby."

Police are looking for a suspect and urged anyone with information to contact investigators.
