HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

After two rounds in a national contest, the Rocket City is in the top spot - and in the running to win $5 million.

The contest is the Georgetown University Energy Prize Competition, and each round involves an energy audit.

City leadership, Huntsville City Schools, and Huntsville Utilities are working together on this project.

"The end result of the partnership is if we spend a little less on energy and a little more on conservation than we were in the past year, then we save a little money for the taxpayers," said Mayor Tommy Battle on Tuesday. "It will be nice to win the $5 million, we will not lie to you on that, but the bigger point is we're doing the right thing."

There are still four more rounds to go. To track Huntsville's progress and to see how you can pitch in, click here.
