House fire in Adamsville claims 4 lives

ADAMSVILLE, AL (WBRC) - Four people died in a house fire on Veterans Memorial Drive in Adamsville Saturday morning.
Fire Chief Scott Harbison says eight people were in the home when the fire started around 9:45 a.m. Four people made it out safely and four people died. Harbison says the victims' ages are 63, 20, 6 and 4.
Harbison says they are all related.
A 1-year-old child went to the hospital, but family members say the child is doing OK. They are going to keep the child at the hospital overnight for observation.
Harbison says the fire started in the dining room area. They don't know how the fire started.
Harbison says it appears everyone was asleep and some either woke up or was awake and saw the fire and began trying to get everyone out. Harbison would not say if the house had a smoke detector. He says the home is a total loss.
Mayor Pam Palmer was on the scene Saturday morning praying with family members.
She says the city will collect donations at Adamsville City Hall this week or people can drop off items at the dispatch center across from City Hall 24 hours a day.
Mayor Palmer says the biggest need right now is monetary donations to pay for funeral expenses.
"This family was not expecting to bury four family members at one time," said Palmer.
Palmer says the 6-year-old girl who died in the fire attended Crumley Chapel Elementary in Jefferson County. Her teacher and a school administrator came to the scene Saturday morning.
Palmer says a city council member who owns a pharmacy in town is going to donate toiletries and other immediate needs to the family.
