BPD hopes to combat increased homicide rate; More at 5 a.m.

Homicide rates in Birmingham are up, and police are hoping that increased patrols will help. There have been 92 homicides this year compared to 62 in 2014.

Hillary Clinton  recently spoke out against Walter Energy, a company that announced another round of layoffs that affect hundreds of miners. The company laid off 319 miners earlier in the week. A judge also declared that Walter Energy is not obligated to continue paying for retiree health benefits.

A University of West Alabama cheerleader is being remembered this morning after she was killed in a wreck. Bethany Harris, 19, died after the car she was driving hit a tree near Tuscaloosa.
