Here's what you saw on Good Day Alabama:
JEH JEH LIVE - WBRC FOX6 recently ran the Operation: Room Retreat contest to give away a room retreat makeover for a military family who deserves it! We asked you to nominate veterans. On Veterans Day, we revealed the winner - Lisa and John Wippler of Oxford! John Wippler Gunnery Sgt., retired after 20 years in 2006. He had several back surgeries and suffers from Graves' disease. He and his wife, Lisa started SemperFi Rescue in 2008- a not for profit dog rescue that they run and operate from their home. So far they have saved over 1,200 dogs from local high kill shelters. John stays in the bedroom most days and nights in his recliner due to his severe pain and PTSD. Over the weekend, the WBRC FOX6 crew along with the sponsors and volunteers worked hard in the Wippler home to create the new room and we revealed it to Lisa and John this morning.
MEDS & FOOD - Nutrition and diet guru Madelyn Fernstrom presents the ultimate guide to food and medicine interaction – "Don't Eat This If You're Taking That: The Hidden Risks of Mixing Food and Medicine." Seventy percent of Americans take at least one prescription medication, over 50 percent take two prescription medications, and 20 percent take five or more. The majority of Americans, therefore, are vulnerable to the hidden risks of mixing foods and medications! Millions of Americans every day follow a ritual of consuming drugs with their meals, unaware of the potentially harmful interactions that might occur. Health and nutrition expert Madelyn Fernstrom demystifies food and medicine interactions in Don't Eat This If You're Taking That: The Hidden Risks of Mixing Food and Medicine. Fernstrom covers what foods to take and avoid with the most common prescriptions. Drug types included are antidepressants, pain relievers, blood thinners, antacids, cholesterol-lowering and blood pressure. Within these pages is an easy-to-use reference guide for anyone currently taking a medication—whether term or long-term—with foods to avoid that may interfere with the effectiveness of the medication. Dr. Fernstrom explains why you should avoid grapefruit if you take cholesterol medicine, not eat dark-green vegetables when on blood thinners, avoid soy while on thyroid medication, and cut out aged cheese while on antidepressants. She advocates small diet changes with big health payoffs! Additionally, each chapter features a Dietary Supplements Alert box, providing the most up-to-date information on interactions with vitamins, minerals, and other dietary supplements. Readers can easily personalize their healthiest eating plan to work with, not against, their medications. "Don't Eat This If You're Taking That" is a must-have reference book for every household!
