The Helena Huskies are off to a great start after beating Sidney Lanier in the first round of the state playoffs.
Helena came out on fire on the first drive. Quarterback Riley Davis and receiver Kourtney Moore made a great play together. On fourth and 16, Davis connected with Moore for a 30-yard touchdown pass to take the lead 7-0.
But on the ensuing kickoff, Lanier’s DaCoreyon Johnson returned the ball 45 yards to the 35-yard line to start it off for the Poets.
His brother, Adreain Johnson, scored on a fourth and three play from the 15-yard line to tie the game up 7-7.
Helena’s defense made a couple of great plays behind the line of scrimmage to end the half.
In the third quarter, the defense was really good. On fourth down, Lanier was punting when Justin Watson blocked a punt on the 10-yard line and then fell on the ball in the end zone for the score and the lead 14-7.
And later in the fourth quarter, after a Helena field goal, the Huskies' dynamic duo connected again. Davis found Moore for a second touchdown, this time for 19 yards.
The final score was 24-7 in favor of Helena. The Huskies improve to 9-3. While the Poets end the season at 4-7.
