BARGAINOMICS - Janice talked with the Bargainomics Lady Judy Bates about some deals for you. She told us about a new thrift store she found - Friendship Baptist Association Thrift Store on Highway 160 in Hayden. That's where she bought 3 pairs of what look to be brand new still-in-the-box $78 to $89 a pair Ros Hommerson leather pumps for only $3 a pair. Like many of our viewing area's thrift stores, this one supports a number of worthwhile ministries. If you've ever wanted to learn how to quilt but had no one to teach you, the Springville Road Library can solve your problem. This Friday it's offering a free class from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for beginner to intermediate quilters. You don't have to register to participate. For information, call the Springville Library at 205-226-4083. Does your refrigerator's icemaker have a door dispenser? If it does, it may look like the one in this photo, but who thinks to stoop down and stare up into their icemaker opening? Your dispenser opening needs to be cleaned at least every week or two but never use harsh chemicals. Mix a solution of one cup white vinegar & one cup water in a clean spray bottle that has never contained dangerous cleaners or chemicals. Spray the area and wipe it with a clean cloth. And use a soft toothbrush or other small brush to clean the spots you can't reach with the cloth. This vinegar solution is also ideal for washing fruits & vegetables, and it's very easy on your wallet. For more on these and other deals, visit www.Bargainomics.com.

WHERE IS THE LOVE - Mike talked with Dr. Misty Smith, LPC, from Convenient Therapy about the importance of knowing your "deal-breakers." New research shows that people weigh deal breakers more heavily than they do the deal makers they hope to find in a person. They prioritize avoiding risk over acquiring gains. People pay more attention to what's wrong with a would-be partner than what is right. We should ask ourselves, "Is this costing us some potentially great opportunities?" The study shows women have more deal-breakers than men, the stakes are higher for them. They are the ones who get pregnant, so it is crucial that they are picky enough to choose a mate who is capable of helping them successfully raise that child. People who consider themselves a good catch have more deal breakers. Everyone has more deal breakers when considering a long-term relationship rather than a short-term one. Both genders say the biggest deal breakers are "disheveled or unclean" followed closely by "lazy" and "too needy." More women than men found "lacks a sense of humor" to be a non-starter, likely because humor is linked to higher intelligence. Interestingly, the research found that men prefer not to date a woman who is smarter than they are. Men found "talks too much" to be a big deal breaker. Good first kiss is a deal maker or deal breaker. In long-term partners, the top deal breakers were "anger issues," "is currently dating multiple partners" and "person is untrustworthy." In short-term partners, the deal-breakers were "smells bad" and "has poor hygiene." Dr. Smith says it is a good question, psychologists say, to ask yourself if your deal-breakers are reasonable or irrational. While it is smart to pay attention to reasonable deal breakers, if you have irrational ones you may risk missing out on a good mate. Some people refuse to date someone with sweaty hands, crooked teeth, beards, stubby toes, ugly toes, and men in sandals. If you want to know if a deal breaker is reasonable or ridiculous, you should "ask yourself what your best friend would say," it helps you look at things more objectively. Dr. Smith recommends you make a list of the top 5 "must-haves" for your future mate. Make a list of the top five deal-breakers. Don't make those lists much longer, or you may find the irrational ones adding up. Be aware, though, that negative traits can wear down a relationship really quickly. For more information, you can contact Dr. Smith at 205-529-2731 or visit convenienttherapy.com.
