BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Wenonah has won Region 5 in Class 5A.
The Dragons faced the sixth-ranked Pleasant Grove Spartans and the defense got the goose egg while the offense was clicking like a fire-breathing dragon.
In the first quarter, Dragons quarterback Armand Green put the first score on the board with a six-yard quick handoff.
The defense and special teams played extremely well, also. Brian Woods blocked a punt on the 15-yard line. It set up a touchdown pass from Aubrey Robinson to Armand Green. The Dragons were up 14-0.
And just before the half, Spartan quarterback Tony Stewart, while almost being sacked, threw an interception to Brian Green. Green took it all the way to the eight-yard line.and on the next play, Robinson on a quarterback sneak up the middle scored to make it 21-0 at the half.
In the second half, it was all Wenonah. Robinson threw another touchdown pass to Green, this time a 23 yarder. But the PAT attempt was not good.
Wenonah had a 27 -0 lead going into the 4th quarter. Add one more Robinson scamper for 25 yards on a quarterback keeper and you have a blowout to win Region 5.
Wenonah remains undefeated at 9-0 and will host the first game, but Pleasant Grove is 2nd in the region and despite the loss, will also host the first game of the playoffs.
