GADSDEN, AL (WBRC) - An Etowah County grand jury will decide whether a woman will stand trial for the death of her newborn.
Cassie Rivera, 33, and her husband, Alberto, are both charged with capital murder in the September 2014 death of their 18-day-old child, Micah Lorenzo Rivera. The two were indicted in December 2014 and 36-year-old Alberto Rivera has a preliminary hearing set for November 19.
At a hearing for Cassie Rivera, Capt. Josh Morgan of the Etowah County Sheriff's Office testified the body of young Micah was studied by a special forensics unit in Texas. That investigation indicated the baby's skull was broken in four places, likely the result of a single blow with a severe amount of force. The investigation also indicated the baby likely died very soon after the blow, due to the lack of healing.
The Riveras reported at the time they called 911 to their home on Jerry Lane in Gadsden, after the baby became unresponsive. Medics arriving on the scene found the baby already deceased.
Both suspects are being held without bond in the Etowah County Jail.
