WALKER COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - One suspect was injured and another is in custody following a multi-county police chase that ended in a crash and officer-involved shooting early Monday morning.
The chase originated in Homewood and ended in a crash near Parrish at the intersection of Park Dunn Road and New Oakman Highway in Walker County, according to Johnathan Appling of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
A Homewood police officer shot one suspect in the white BMW driven by one of the suspects. The injured suspect was airlifted to UAB and is in surgery. There is no update on that suspect's condition.
Trooper Appling could not say if the suspect who was driving the white BMW owned the vehicle. He also couldn't say if the suspect was armed, or if there's a particular reason why the suspect was headed to Walker County.
"It's unfortunate anytime someone is shot, whether it be a suspect or law enforcement. But we're just thankful it wasn't any worse than it was," Appling said.
Another suspect, who police say is a teenager, is in custody. There is no word yet on whether or not that person will face charges. The teenager was not hurt in the incident.
New Oakman Highway was closed for the investigation, but reopened around 10 a.m.
The State Bureau of Investigations is leading the investigation into the chase and officer-involved shooting.
