TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - Residents of Tuscaloosa County, living outside the Tuscaloosa or Northport city limits, should plan for earlier garbage collection times, starting Monday, Oct. 19.
Waste Management, the company that provides residential garbage service in Tuscaloosa County, will begin dispatching its trucks shortly after 5 a.m. each day, beginning Monday. Currently, trucks go out during the 6 a.m. hour.
Jim Patrie, Tuscaloosa County Director of Solid Waste, says with the earlier schedule, residents may want to put their garbage carts out the night before their pick-up day.
Patrie says road congestion and safety concerns prompted the change. Under the current schedule, he says garbage trucks are on main roads during the times that school buses are loading students.
"Those big trucks out on the road has caused some concern, and there's been some congestion, so what Waste Management's doing is trying to alleviate that by starting early," he said.
Officials with the county and Waste Management say under the new schedule, trucks should have made it into less crowded neighborhood areas, by the time buses begin running.
Patrie says Waste Management customers are being notified of the change through phone calls.
