JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

If you need to do any business downtown at the Jefferson County Courthouse, Monday might be the day to do it.

Monday is Columbus Day. All federal and state offices are closed, but Jefferson County Manager Tony Petelos wants to encourage taxpayers there are bound to be fewer people downtown.

Petelos said if you are affected by driver licenses offices closing down or you may need a Jefferson County voter ID card, you should come down on Monday.

"Monday is a good day. Folks assume we are closed because the federal government is closed. The state is closed, but we are open Monday. If you have business to do, it's a good day to do business," said Petelos.

Petelos said the Birmingham and Bessemer offices can renew driver licenses. The registrars and probate judges can provide free voter ID's.
