MCCALLA, AL (WBRC) - One man is clinging to his life and another is hospitalized after the two shot each other at a home in McCalla in what Jefferson County authorities are calling a "love triangle."
A 28-year-old man was at his girlfriend's home in the 5100 block of Williams Drive in McCalla when his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend, also 28, forced his way into the home around 7:20 a.m. Monday, according to Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Randy Christian.
The ex-boyfriend shot the new boyfriend and the victim returned fire, Christian said.
Authorities say the suspect fled to Fairfield in a red pickup truck. The suspect reported being shot after pulling off the road near Hillside Drive in Fairfield.
The victim was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Both men were transported to the hospital.
"We, just got to, as a society, learn how to control our emotions, and it sounds like emotions got the best of somebody in this case. He acted out on it. I'm sure if you asked him now if he'd like to take it back, he would, but it's too late for that. In something like this there are no do-overs," Christian said.
The shooting stemmed from an argument over a relationship the two men had with the same woman, according to the initial investigation.
