MORRIS, AL (WBRC) - It was a battle for the ages. No. 4 Mortimer Jordan hosted No. 10 Alexandria out of Calhoun County in a 5A regional battle royale.
Both teams with strong running games, so you knew this would be an old school, smash mouth barn burner.
In the first quarter, Jacob Heathcock scored a 12-yard touchdown, but the PAT was not good. Valley Cubs led 6-0.
The Blue Devils took the lead with 3:14 left in the first quarter when Duncan Hodges barreled in on a one-yard touchdown to make it 7-6.
In the 2nd quarter with 9:18 left, Alexandria's running backs got cranked up. Jamal Tucker had a superb night of running. He scored two touchdowns and had close to 100 yards in the first half.
In fact, all three of Alexandria's running backs, Jamal Tucker, Jacob Heath and Keenan Woodruff, finished with 100-yard games on the night.
In the third quarter, Hodges threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Mccleney to take the lead for the Blue Devils.
Then Heathcock ran 51 yards for the Valley Cubs to take back the lead 32-28.
With less than two minutes left in the game, Hodges scores a one-yard touchdown and the two-point conversion afterwards was good to pull the
Blue Devils within three points.
But with one second left and Alexandria leading 39-36, Hodges threw a Hail Mary in the end zone that fell incomplete.
Alexandria won by three and Mortimer Jordan gets their first loss of the year. The Valley Cubs improve to 5-0 while
the Blue Devils fall to 5-1.
