Remembering the Brookwood mine explosion and police are battling a officer shortage

Greetings from the desk of Jonathan Hardison! Here are some of the stories we're working on for you tonight.

Somber memorial

Sixteen years ago today an explosion in the Jim Walters Mine in Brookwood killed 13 miners and might have taken another life if the man Vanessa Araiza is talking to tonight hadn’t left to help a friend who’d gotten sick. Tonight he’s returned to the memorial to remember his friends and coworkers and shares his memories of that day with us on WBRC FOX6 News at 9.

Police shortage

And Birmingham police are telling our Sherea Harris tonight that they’re struggling right now with a major shortage of officers because of retirements and promotions. On WBRC FOX6 News at 10 Sherea looks at how this shortage is affecting the protection you’re depending on and how the department is working to try and cover the shortage.
