Three words: What a game.
Overtime victory. This was one for the ages. Bessemer City boasting a No.1 defense against one of the top running backs in the state in Brian Robinson, Jr. The winner? Everyone who watched this one.
First quarter, Bessemer quarterback KD Davis threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Stanton to give the Tigers the 7-0 lead with 6:02 left in the 1st quarter.
But did big time running back for Hillcrest Brian Robinson, Jr. on 4th and 1 broke through the middle of the pile to emerge with a 20-yard touchdown to even things up.
After that score, it was all Bessemer City in the 1st half. Jacquez Hall scored a 1-yard touchdown to make it 14-7. And late in the 2nd quarter, Cole Frederick threw an interception to Terdarrius Coldwell. He took it back to the 25-yard line and it set up a 20-yard touchdown combo from KD Davis to Jaylin Walker to break out the lead for the Tigers 20-7 at halftime.
That would be all that Bessemer City’s offense would do in the game. Hillcrest’s running back Robinson scored again from a yard out, then quarterback Cole Frederick scored one from the same distance to tie it up 20-20.
The game went to overtime. Hillcrest won the toss and deferred the ball to Bessemer City. Bessemer turned the ball over on downs on the first possession.
And just like that, senior kicker Dean Reynolds kicked a 15-yard field goal on 4th down to seal the overtime victory for the Patriots. Head coach Sam Adams couldn’t ask for a better name of a coach for a Patriot team and you couldn’t ask for a better win than this.
