TALLADEGA, AL (WBRC) - Talladega Mayor Larry Barton is now at home resting after being assaulted over the weekend.

Barton said the assault happened around 8 a.m. Saturday outside of the Cahaba Heights Plaza Barber Shop where he works part-time. Barton said his attacker hit him with a bat and his fists.

"I get a hold of his left hand where the bat is, and he hits me in the face with his fist, his right fist," said Barton.

Barton said the man was wearing a trench coat and was masked.

"Had I not pulled the mask off enough, to see who it was, I wouldn't have known who it was," said Barton.

Vestavia Hills Police arrested Benny Green and charged him with first degree assault Monday. Barton and Green had been friends for years. Barton said he has no idea what sparked the attack.

FOX6 news reporter Megan Hayes was about to ask Barton a tough question about rumors of a hidden camera recording of the mayor engaged in an affair with Green's wife. Barton beat her to the punch.

"Mayor, I hate to ask this," said Megan.

"About the sex tape," Barton interjected. "We've been asked that all day. I don't have any idea what they're talking about. I don't have any idea whatsoever. They keep talking about it but you would think if he's had it all these years, why would he wait for two weeks before election?"

Barton is running for another term as mayor.

"It's perfect timing if they're trying to sabotage my campaign," he said.

As for Benny Green, Barton says their friendship is over. He's ready to see some justice.

"I think the courts will take care of him," he said.

According to the Jefferson County Jail's website, Green is no longer being held.
