State budget battle gets worse and candidates gear up for the GOP debate

Good afternoon from the desk of Janet Hall. Here are the stories we're working on for FOX6 News this evening.

"Unacceptable and unworkable"

That's how Governor Robert Bentley describes the budget passed by the Alabama House. Beyond a devastating $156 million cut to Medicaid he says it would also cut state agencies by 5.5%, shutting down driver license offices, killing jobs for troopers and reducing public disease control. Will this proposal get by the Senate? We'll have a live report from Montgomery.

So many candidates – so little time

The first GOP presidential debates begin on FOX News Channel tonight. On FOX6 News at 5 we'll talk to a local political expert about what to expect and who to watch. Which of the 17 candidates will break from the pack?

Is public education really free?

Any parent who goes through the school registration process with a child knows there are all sorts of hidden fees. They add up to hundreds of dollars to pay for a so called "free" education.  We'll look at the range of charges from one public school system to the next. Find out where your system is on the spectrum.

Those stories and more beginning at 5 on FOX6 News.
