Pelham hosting ice skating competition this weekend

PELHAM, AL (WBRC) - More than 100 ice skaters will be coming to Pelham this weekend to compete in the Magic City Ice Classic.

The Birmingham Figure Skating Club is sponsoring the weekend event, which is open to the public and free of charge.

Nearly 120 competitors throughout the southeast, Texas and North Carolina will be skating.

Figure skater Sarah Bamford, 13, is one of the local competitors. She says she's dedicated her life to being the best she can be out on the ice.

The first time she went around the rink was at her sister's 6th birthday party. After watching her go around once, her mom thought it would be a good idea to put her in group classes, she said.

"It was definitely slow at the beginning, because I had problems doing the jumps. Once I got older and I understood the jumps more, it went faster and I got it better," Bamford said.

Bamford said the sport is great for character building and relieving stress.

"It's not a bad idea to come down here and skate every once in a while, because it's how you start. Just have fun," she said.

The Magic City Ice Classic will be held Friday, July 31 from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 1 from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena.
