BLOUNT COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - A former Cleveland High School teacher accused of having sex with a student has married that student, a move that could make prosecuting his case difficult.
A marriage license obtained by FOX6 shows 38-year-old Matthew Wester married the now 18-year-old student in Gulf Shores on June 13.
The former Cleveland High School math teacher, assistant football coach, and head track coach was indicted by a Blount County grand jury in January on one count of "intentionally and knowingly" engaging in sexual conduct with a student under the age of 19 "done for the purposes of gratifying the sexual desire of either party, to wit: kissing and spending the night with the victim."
According to court records, Wester turned himself in on Feb. 3 and posted his $6,000 bond.
Now that the former student is his wife, she can't be forced to testify against Wester under Alabama law.
Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey still plans to try the case, but said on Wednesday the case doesn't have a court date yet.
