AMERICAN MADE CARS - The list is in! Each year, Cars.com releases its American-Made Index, a list that reveals which cars are the "Most American." This indexis derived from information found on the window stickers of every new car, and takes into account where the car is assembled and what percentage of the car's parts are domestic. That information is then aligned with the number of cars sold here in the States. Historically, the top spot on this list has gone back and forth between a foreign and a domestic automaker. Yes, that's right, a foreignautomaker could be the most American! Patrick Olsen, the Editor-in-Chief, revealed the Most American Made Cars to us. For more information, visit cars.com.
WORLD CUP REAX - The U.S. National Team wins the Women's World Cup! The U.S. team beat Japan 5 to 2 yesterday. The U-S scored four goals in the opening 16 minutes. The win over Japan avenged the 2011 loss when Japan won on penalty kicks. This is the U.S.'s third Women's World Cup crown - but the first since 1999. Janice and Mike talked with Coach Preston Goldfarb, Head Coach for the Men's Soccer team at Birmingham Southern College about the win, the impact it plays on soccer in the U.S., and the way the rest of the world now views the U.S. after the Women's win and the Men's great run earlier this year!
SHARK CONCERNS - Dr. Marcus Drymon, a shark expert from the Dauphin Island Sea Labs, joined us to discuss fears about shark attacks. He says sharks are as prevalent in the Gulf of Mexico as they are off U.S. east coast. That said, many shark populations are lower than we'd like to see them, what fisheries scientists would consider overfished. As far as tips for avoiding shark bites, he says that's a bit more difficult. Much like the only sure fire way to avoid being in a car wreck is to stay completely off the road, there will always be a small chance of getting bitten by a shark if you swim in the ocean. He stresses that the likelihood of getting attacked by a shark is extremely small, and should not keep folks from enjoying the ocean. We certainly continue to drive our cars... In the unlikely event of shark bite, one needs to exit the water immediately and seek medical attention.
MOMMY MINUTE - In today's Mommy Minute, Clare discussed how to choose a daycare and the most important questions you as a parent should ask. She got advance from the Moms on Call specialists Jennifer Walker and Laura Hunter. They says one of the very first questions you need to ask is are they state certified. Do they meet those minimum state requirements in safety interior and exterior as well as the teacher to child ratios? And make sure that the teachers are certified and have CPR certification, as well. Ask about their inclement weather policies, what would happen in the event of a tornado warning - both where the kids would go and also how do they notify the parents. Find out their vaccine policies, illness policies, and policy for disembarks from the bus after traveling. Also inquire about what kind of certification the driver is required to have. You can also ask about communication uses texts and messages between you and the teachers and if there is a way to go online and look into the classroom.
ASK THE GARDENER - John Manion, curator of the wildflower garden at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, took questions from viewers about their gardening needs. For more information, call 205-414-3950 or visit bbgardens.org.
