OUR HOUSE - Summer is a great time for projects around the house! One simple way to make a big impact is painting! Jackie Marchant from Marvin's Building Materials and Home Centers gave us some easy tips for achieving great results on your next paint project. Jackie says be sure to know the square footage of the room you are painting before you head to the store. The pros recommend one gallon for every 400 square feet. Covering textured, rough or unprimed surfaces may require more. Prepare the surface before any paint is applied. It is extremely important to make sure your painting surface is clean, smooth and dry. Make sure to remove outlet and switch covers. The use a good blue painters tape is a great way to protect areas that you don't want to receive paint. Blue painters tape is perfect to use around window and door frames, baseboards & moldings. Don't underestimate how long it'll take you to get the job done. Allow at least 24 hours to dry before bringing everything back into the room. Allow two weeks to 30 days to cure before washing or wiping. Jackie says paint is available in many different quality levels and types. Inexpensive paint is not always the best option in the long run as it usually has a short lifespan. Higher quality paint has many advantages. A high quality paint will generally cost more per gallon, but will require fewer coats and will typically have a better end result. Ultimately buying a more expensive paint can save you time and money on an overall paint project. Today the most popular paint is latex based. Water is the main ingredient of latex paint making it easier to clean-up and more environmentally friendly than oil based. The key to quality latex paint is the concentration of its solids. The higher the solid content or density the thicker the paint film. Thicker paints give better coverage and require fewer coats. Again, the extra expense for quality actually results in a savings as you will need less paint, and you will have to repaint less often Absolutely. Whether you are using a paint brush or a roller there are things you can look for to make sure you are getting a quality product. The better the paint brush or roller, the better your results will be. Also if high quality applicators are properly cared for, it will allow you to use them multiple times on multiple projects. Brushes are extremely versatile and the most popular. Spending more on the right brush will get you a better finish as well as save you time. Make sure to look for a brush with flagged ends that are frayed at the end of the filaments. This will allow the brush to hold more paint and make the finish smooth. The bristles should be flexible and spring back into shape easily. Lastly, look for bristles to be longer in the center and shorter on the ends. A tapered bristle pattern gives you better control, especially with tight corners and edges. Rollers are a great solution for many paint projects. All rollers are not the same. A high quality roller can be identified by the rigidity of the roller core and the nap. Look for a roller that has a rigid core. Core rigidity can be tested by squeezing the roller cover. Also pull on the nap on the roller cover. If the fibers release easily then it's a cheap roller. A good roller nap will not easily shed. Don't forget to choose a good roller frame with 5-wires vs. one with 4-wires. This keeps the roller cover rigid resulting in a smoother finish. The great thing about rollers is that they can cut your application time in half. Cleaning a brush or roller is easy and will allow you to get a long life out of your investment, which will save you money. For cleaning latex paint all you need is warm water and a bit of dishwashing detergent. If you have used an oil based paint, which is less common these days, you will need paint thinner. To clean a brush after using latex paint you will use a small amount of dishwashing detergent and warm water. You should run warm soapy water through the brush initially and then just warm water until the water runs clear. Once the water is clear spin out or squeeze out the excess water and hang to dry. Don't soak the brush in water as it will damage the brush. When the brush is completely dry, place the brush keeper back over the brush for storage. Rollers can be cleaned with warm soapy water after use. Once the excess paint is removed, then run warm water through the roller in the sink. Slide the roller cover about ½ way off the roller frame and spin off the warm water using until the water runs clear. Then the roller can be hung on a rope or dowel horizontally to dry. Never dry a roller cover on its end as any leftover paint can settle on the bottom and ruin the cover.
