BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham police are investigating a homicide after a 15-year-old was shot and killed at a gas station on Pinson Valley Parkway and Winewood Road on Wednesday evening.

On Thursday, investigators released an image of a "person of interest" that they would like to speak to in the case. He is wearing a tan shirt and a tan or light yellow baseball cap.

The Jefferson County Coroner has identified the teen as Shamar Polk.

Officers discovered Polk lying on the ground with gunshot wounds to the head and chest area. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police say Polk and two friends approached customers in a vehicle at the Jet Pep with the intention of carjacking them. A witness told authorities Polk planned on carjacking a vehicle so he and his friends could get home.

Police say someone in the vehicle, described as a mint-colored SUV, shot the teen. The teen then ran across the street to a Shell station where he died.

The SUV left the area in an unknown direction.

Polk's friends, who are 16 and 17 years old, were questioned by police Wednesday evening.
