JEH JEH LIVE - Jeh Jeh joined us with the scoop on the Woodlawn Street Market which is this Saturday! REV Birmingham and the Woodlawn Business Association will host the second Woodlawn Street Market of 2015 on June 20th from 10am to 4pm on 55th Place South. The Summer 2015 event will feature more than 50 vendors, street art, and a street dancing competition. Due to popular demand, the event is now hosted on a tri-annual basis. This will be the fourth installment since the Woodlawn Street Market launch. The first Woodlawn Street Market event was launched June 2014 as an effort to showcase Birmingham's artists, crafters, merchants and retailers to members of the historic Woodlawn community and beyond. Organizers hope to create an atmosphere similar to walkable Birmingham events like Art Walk and Magic City Art Connection, but with a uniqueness that the Woodlawn Business Community and surrounding residents to which can contribute to. Each street market has seen increasing vendor and attendee demand since the initial launch, and displays include a diverse selection of fresh produce, one-of-a-kind wares, cooked cuisine, retail booths, crafts, local fashion, specialty goods and more. The Woodlawn Street Market serves as a launch-pad for up-and-coming startups to test their business ideas before committing to a brick-and-mortar space. Since the initial market, several vendors have transitioned to brick and mortar locations throughout Birmingham. In addition to increasing foot traffic, spurring economic activity and encouraging collaboration amongst new and existing businesses, proceeds from the event – collected through vendor application fees – help the Woodlawn Business Association and REV Birmingham facilitate aesthetic improvements like bike racks, landscaping, banners and additional branding efforts for the district.
