OUR HOUSE - Get your home ready for vacation! Allen Warren with Jones-Warren Construction joined us with some pointers!
Air-conditioner: Turn up the thermostat to about 85 degrees. Doing so will still protect your plants, furniture and other belongings without running up your energy bill.
Plumbing: Turn off water at the main shut-off valve, unless some household items require it to remain on.
Water heater: Set the temperature on "vacation" mode. Most newer water heaters are equipped with this setting. The water heater will run occasionally but not nearly as often as it does normally.
Toilets: Pour a half cup of chlorine into the bowl, not the tank. This will prevent bacteria from growing in the tank.
Lights: Turn off all lights except the ones you want as security measures. Put the security lights on timers.
Refrigerator: Throw out perishables such as milk that will expire while you're gone. Make sure the doors are closed!
Pantry items: Throw away opened bags and boxes of food or give to friends.
Yard: Mow your lawn shortly before your trip.
MORGAN MURPHY - Hidden restaurants and their best recipes await in Off the Eaten Path: On the Road Again, the third helping in the hit series by food critic and bestselling author, Morgan Murphy. Part cookbook, part backroads guide, On the Road Again explores 15,000 miles, 60 restaurants, 150 recipes, and 18 Southern states. Morgan uncovers the South's best local, family-owned restaurants and gets them to give him their best recipes. The book took one heck of a road trip. Not only does Morgan share his candid images from the road, but each recipe in the book is shown in gorgeous full-color. On the Road Again can be used as a travel guide, or if the reader decides to whip up the recipes themselves, each dish was re-tested for the home cook by the Southern Living test staff. You won't need a professional-grade kitchen or a degree from culinary school to master Morgan's finds. Each chapter of On the Road Again explores one Southern state, plus their most celebrated restaurants and recipes, local sayings in the "Overheard" sidebars, ordering tips for getting the best out of these locally inspired indulgences. Scattered throughout the book are also "Great Local Find" pages that document Morgan's top picks for local, artisanal food buys, kitchenware, and spirits. He's even sprinkled his personal song suggestions for each destination, to get into the local spirit with a handpicked soundtrack for each state. Of course, it wouldn't be an Off the Eaten Path book if Morgan didn't reveal the coveted recipes for Southern staples like crisp and tender fried chicken at Harvest restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky, served atop vegetable bread pudding and drizzled with gravy, or the famed strawberry pie from Strawn's Eat Shop in Shreveport, Louisiana. With Murphy at the wheel of his '56 Cadillac, On the Road Again is the ultimate Southern food crawl. Hop in the car, or simply step into your kitchen, and come along for a taste of the family-owned barbecue joints, oyster shacks, and bourgeoning eateries that are the true flavor of the South.
