BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - UAB President Dr. Ray Watts met with UAB student leaders the day before College Sports Solutions will release their audit of football, rifle and bowling programs.

The report will lay out if those sports can return and detail what it would take for them to survive.

The future of the UAB football and two other athletic programs were discussed at the luncheon meeting.

Watts terminated the football, bowling and rifle teams because of financial reasons. That decision was based on an earlier report by CarrSports. The school has hired a second company to look at the school's athletic program and determine if it can support football again.

This week pledges of support are coming in to the school. The city of Birmingham is committing to $2.5 million over five years. The President of the Student Undergraduate Government Association is asking Watt to raise student fees by $25 a semester, raising $550,000 a year for restoration of the three sports. UAB Undergraduate Student Government Association President Garrett Stephens said Watts agreed to study their proposal. But Stephens does not believe the push for football will be over if Watts said no again.

"I think if the report comes back and says football, bowling and rifle are feasible and it will turn a profit and we can bring it back, and it is affordable and we can bring it back and he still says no there will be continuous uproar and discussion on campus," Stephens said.

Watts has already put out a statement saying he will make the final call on the sports June 1.
