Editorial: Paying our respects

Editorial: Paying our respects

The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC General Manager Collin Gaston, first aired on Thursday, May 14, 2015.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day. The nationally recognized holiday pays homage to law enforcement officials and honors those who have been killed in the line of duty."

According to the Officers Down Memorial Page (odmp.org), 530 Alabama law enforcement officers have died in the line of duty protecting and serving Alabamians.

A lot has been said and broadcast in recent days and weeks about the issues we have with some police officers using deadly and unnecessary force when performing their duties. This can lead to a perception that most law enforcement officers are without morals or standards and are just killing machines of the innocent. My opinion is that is a grossly false perception and the vast majority of the men and women serving as law enforcement officers are righteous and selfless.

So in this week of remembrance of all officers lost, let's not overlook the sacrifices being made today, tomorrow and each day after by all police officers as they put their lives on the line to protect us.
