TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) - A West Alabama baseball community is coming together for a 9-year-old who is recovering from a dog attack.

Nine-year-old Titus Wilkerson is recovering from a pit bull attack on Wednesday that left him with severe injuries to his face, neck and other parts of his body. He's still listed in critical condition at Children's of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham.

Wilkerson loves the game of baseball.

"As long as he's on the field he's happy," Titus' dad Mario Wilkerson said.

It's been said, it's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game and giving your best effort.

Thursday evening Wilkerson's teammates and friends gave their best effort for him on the field at the Taylorville ballpark.

"I'm hoping he gets well soon," Titus' teammate Justin Wrenn said.

Before their game, his "Dominators" teammates along with other teams gathered in the center of the field at and took a moment to pray for Titus. Everyone held hands and showed support for this little leaguer who still has a long recovery. You could see Titus' initials on a lot of the faces along with his number.

"We just thank the community all around. We're working diligently to help support the family and that's what makes this area so unique with our community ballpark is that we treat each and every one of these children like they are our own," David Evans, Titus' baseball coach, said.

It's something Titus' dad is thankful for as his son continues to recover.

"Despite it all, he's a strong person. He's still sedated right now has a lot of injuries. But we're praying and God is going to take care of it," Mario Wilkerson said.

We learned the dog that attacked Titus was put to sleep at the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter. No word yet if any charges will be filed against the dog's owner.

An account has been set up in Titus' name at Bank of Tuscaloosa for those who would like to help him during his recovery.

If you are in Birmingham and would like to donate, you can still do so through First Commercial Bank. Just let the FCB bank know the Titus Wilkerson account was originally set up at the Bank of Tuscaloosa.
