HOOVER, AL (WBRC) -

An officer-involved shooting in Hoover that resulted in the death of a 53-year-old man is now under investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation.

Hoover police officers initially responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 700 block of Valley Street in the Bluff Park area, close to Bluff Park United Methodist Church.

Captain Greg Rector said police were called to the home around 5:34 p.m. and didn't find anyone there, so they began patrolling the area.

The officers found three people involved in the disturbance at a nearby shopping center around 6:07 p.m. One of the three, a woman, had minor injuries.

After questioning the three people, officers went back to the house where they met a fourth person who was involved in the disturbance.

"Officers came up to the house on Valley Street to check on an individual and to hear his version of events. Our officers did encounter an armed individual. Our officers did fire rounds," Rector said.

That man was armed and after a confrontation, Rector said two officers shot the man. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

On Wednesday, the Jefferson County coroner's office identified the man as William Russell Smith, 53. He lived at the home where the shooting occurred.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) has taken over the investigation. Rector said that the two officers involved will be on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
