PELHAM, AL (WBRC) - Around 35 people with the Free UAB group met in Pelham and carpooled to Montgomery on Tuesday morning to lobby for several bills that support UAB.
State representative Jack Williams is introducing three bills and John Rogers is introducing two bills.
Williams' first bill would reinstate UAB football. The second one would require SACS accreditation training for all trustees at any college or university in the state.
His third bill would expand the UA System Board of Trustees to give equal representation to all three campuses.
John Rogers' first bill would change the makeup of the board of trustees, giving each school five representatives.
His other bill would create a separate board of trustees for UAB and UAH campuses.
The Free UAB supporters were planning to divide into groups and have each person meet three house representatives and one senator on Tuesday.
Kris Findlay has been spear-heading some of the Free UAB events and he believes showing up in person will send a strong message to state lawmakers.
"Very few people go to see them down there. Most people who go to see them there are paid lobbyists so when a citizen lobbyist walks in that's not being paid or compensated, they're doing this on their own time, the representatives and senators really perk up to that," Findlay said.
On March 10, the Free UAB group is planning to have a huge rally on the steps of the state capitol.
They plan to have a couple hundred people there. They want a fair hearing for the UAB bills.
