BPD: Elderly man in stable condition after office-involved shooting

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - The State Bureau of Investigations is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Birmingham on Friday.

Earlier Friday evening, Lt. Sean Edwards said a Birmingham police officer and a Birmingham firefighter went to an apartment in the 7900 block of 1st Ave. S. on a welfare check.

The officer and firefighter knocked on the door and said when the resident opened the door, he had a gun pointed at them.

The officer fired at the man, striking him twice. The man was taken to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Shortly before 11 p.m., Birmingham police said the man was in stable condition.

"They're had been some reports of some dementia with the individual. And so the officer went up with the fire department to assist knocked on the door, and the gentleman came to the door and presented a firearm. And so at the time the officer had to respond immediately," Lt. Edwards said.

The State Bureau of Investigations has taken over the case.
