BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Thursday night, the Birmingham Mayor's Office and Infinity Insurance announced a major move downtown.

The Birmingham-based company will be moving into the vacant, former Birmingham News building on 22nd Street North and 4th Avenue North. They are currently located on Colonnade Parkway off of Highway 280.

The mayor's spokesperson, April Odom, originally said this expansion could produce up to 500 new jobs for the city. The mayor's office corrected that statement to say that 500 employees would be moving downtown.

The mayor said while the positions aren't newly created, having those people and the company in the downtown area will hep kick start future economic growth.

"So when a company like Infinity makes a decision to move downtown, that attracts other companies to come downtown. And it takes up a lot of vacant space that we have in terms of commercial space, and there were in a position to grow," Williams said.

Mayor Bell added that the city will make another big announcement in the near future about an automotive company. We'll continue to follow those developments so check back to
