HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

With colder temperatures on the way, now is a good time to know how to protect your home from costly repairs.

Roto-Rooter master plumber Chris Byrd said the best way to prevent frozen pipes is to turn on your water. If you're worried about the water bill, he said once you get the repair bill, you'll regret worrying about the water.

Byrd said they get so many calls after freezing temperatures that they have to put people on waiting lists.

He also said the best way to prevent the headache and the bill is to leave your faucets dripping overnight.

Also, disconnect your garden hose from the faucet outside and cover it with something to prevent it from freezing.

Another good idea is to open the cabinets under the sink so heat can get to the pipes. Not doing these things could this cost you.

"Depending on where it's at it could be anywhere from about $150 up, it just depends on where it's at and how hard it is to get to it," Byrd said. "A lot of times when it freezes and busts, you have to cut back several inches on both sides."

Byrd said you can just run the faucet closet to the back of the house so water can move throughout or run every faucet for an extra layer of protection.
