CENTER POINT, AL (WBRC) -

Derrick Graham was enjoying a noon day nap on Wednesday afternoon with his 1-year-old son Derrick, Jr. when he heard a noise.

“I thought it was my wife,” Graham recounts. “But I didn't pay much attention.”

But as it continued, he eventually got up and went to the kitchen only to find glass from a broken window all over the floor.

“I look and hear a noise in my daughter's room and I go grab my gun and I come back,” Graham says.

When he returned to the kitchen, Graham said he saw 21-year-old Deontre Johnson trying to get out the backdoor with stolen property.

“He was trying to unlock the door,” Graham says demonstrating with his hands. “He had the TV in his hand and the game and was trying to go out the door and I caught him at the door."

Graham says that's when he pulled his gun on Johnson and held him as he called 911.

He says during that time, Johnson told him two other men were outside waiting on him to come out with the goods.

“He was saying that they sent him in and he was saying their names,” he says. “He was scared, he was hollering.”

When Jefferson County deputies arrived, they arrested Johnson.

Graham says it was tough keeping his young son away from the suspect. But it's also what helped him have restraint.

“I didn't want him growing up thinking his dad had killed or whatever. But at that time, it might be what you have to do,” he said.

Having lived in his home only a few months, Graham says he hasn't had any problems before and he hopes this will be the last time, for everyone's sake.

“If it happens again, he might not be so lucky,” he said.

Johnson has been charged with burglary and theft of property and remain in the Jefferson County Jail.
