BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
Birmingham police say a homeowner shot two men who were trying to break into his home, sending one to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Birmingham Police Lt. Sean Edwards said they got a call of a burglary in progress at a home in the 7800 block of 2nd Avenue South in East Lake around 10:24 a.m. Thursday.
When officers got to the scene, the homeowner told him he heard someone breaking into his house. He went into the front part of his home, saw the two male suspects and fired multiple shots that hit them both.
The suspects ran from the house and investigators believe they drove themselves to St. Vincent's East.
One of the suspects was later transported to UAB Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Lt. Edwards said the homeowner had been burglarized about a week ago, but he didn't know what was stolen. He said it's possible the suspects who were shot on Thursday were the same ones who burglarized the home previously.
“I just believe a lot of times, homeowners have just really had enough and are just really trying to take a stand and protect their life and their property,” Edwards said.
Others in the neighborhood felt like the homeowner did the right thing.
"I feel like he did what you were supposed to do. Someone broke into you home. I would do the same thing. They are protecting themselves that is his right," Demarkus Richardson said.
The district attorney's office will determine if any charges may be filed against the homeowner.
The suspects' names have not yet been released, pending formal charges.
